insignia replicates xbox live, complete with matchmaking, and xlink kai lets you host private arenas that emulate a system link lan using a pc on the same network.
Connecting to Insignia (Xbox Live but free) can be a little intimidating at first.
Thankfully, we can help.
Insignia is free Xbox Live for multiple OG Xbox games, including Halo 2. To connect, first you'll need to register your Xbox with Insignia, which you can do with the Insignia Helper. If you don't have a techy friend with a softmodded Xbox and an OG Xbox memory card, this involves using FatXplorer to format a USB stick (or getting one from Custom Xbox Direct!)

Follow the guide at insignia.live/guide/connect for the best info. The Insignia Helper just registers your HDD key with Insignia's servers once; after that, everything can be done like 2004. You'll need to register an account with Insignia, select a gamertag, and even put in dummy credit card info. Update your Xbox's software if necessary by trying to run "Xbox Live" from your Halo 2 Main Menu.

Several of our players have run into serious trouble getting online even after registering with Insignia. XUnleash, the dashboard Rocky5 auto-installs, fights over your DNS settings with Microsoft Dashboard; plus, once you softmod your console, you'll need to use Rocky5's Softmodding Extras Disc to re-install the Microsoft Dashboard to change settings.
Here's the part no one tells you! If you're running into issues connecting to Xbox Live after registering, first try running this Windows .exe version of Insignia DNS on a computer also connected to the same network as your Xbox! Just follow the onscreen instructions and change your DNS server settings on your Xbox to whatever it says. Easy!

Insignia DNS exists in other forms on Github - specifically as a python script that builds a custom .exe for you - but running this simple pre-compiled program clears up any errors in a jiffy.
